The Calbiga Cave, the Philippines’ biggest karst formation and at 2970 hectares, one of the largest in Asia, is an adventurer’s playground. It was only first systematically explored in 1987 by an eight-person team of Italian speleologists, and the main cave, Langun, has a chamber the size of three football fields. All these attraction are between one and two hours’ drive, plus between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes’ walk, from the Calbiga proper.

SWIMMING IN THE DARK

The Caecogobius cryptophthalmus - now say it five times fast – is further proof that necessity is the mother of invention. This 7cm-long fish, discovered in 1987 in the cave system around Calbiga ,appears to have no eyes. at least none that we can see. After all, what’s the point when you live in permanent darkness? This extremely rare type of fish ,the first found in the Philippines, has eyes embedded under its skin; this is evidence for some that evolution is still under way ,however in which direction is the question.

THE BLIND FISH
The extremely rare gobinee fish (Caecogobius cryptophtalmus) was found in a cave at Calbiga,Samar in 1987.

"CAECOGOBIUS CRYPTOPHTALMUS"

First hipogeans fish found in the Philippines, and
first gobinee known in the world, discovered in the karst of Calbiga,Samar, in 1987, by the Iltalian spelunker .The name originates from the total absence of any external traces of eyes.
The presence of some pigmentation, thin scales , and deeply embedded eyes indicate that the adaptive process to the cave habitat is still underway . Length is about 7 centimeters.

Location: Calbiga,Samar, 52 kms. from Tacloban, the cave is 6 kilometers away from the town proper, accessible by foot. The Philippines' biggest karst formation and one of the second largest in Southeast Asia, the 2,968-hectare cave system is composed of 12 caves with wide underground spaces, unique rock formations and sub-terreanean water course. The surface area of Calbiga Caves has a "mid-mountain forest" forest which is the habitat of some threatened wild species like bats, cave crickets, eyeless shell fishes. It was first scientifically exlored in 1987 by an eight-man team of Italian speleologists who belived there are still several hundred of kilometres of galleries waiting to be explored. The karst has an estimated total surface area of 900 sq. km. The main cave in Langun, has a chamber that could be easily fit in three football fields. The other big caves are Gobingob and Bitong Mahangin.
